# Powder coating from independent machine shops

A durable baked-on finish sprayed onto your metal parts and cured hard. Tougher than wet paint, in gloss, matte, textured, or metallic, and essentially any color. Applied as a secondary op after cutting, bending, or machining. Upload a part and hear back from shops set up for coating.

## Powder coating shops on OpenSpindle

Real shops that prep, spray, and oven-cure powder coat in-house. See their equipment and talk to the person finishing your part.

## Finishes our coating shops run

The same laser-cut bracket in each finish, so you can read color, gloss, and texture on one reference part. Shops stock the common colors below and can order specific RAL or custom powders. If your color is not here, ask when you request a quote.

- **Semi-gloss textured black** -- Most popular · ~50% gloss
- **Gloss black** -- ~90% gloss
- **Matte black** -- 0-9% gloss
- **Wrinkle black** -- Textured · hides fingerprints
- **Metallic gunmetal** -- ~75% gloss · metal flake
- **Gloss gray** -- ~87% gloss
- **Gloss white** -- ~90% gloss
- **Gloss blue** -- ~85% gloss
- **Gloss green** -- ~85% gloss
- **Gloss red** -- ~90% gloss
- **Gloss yellow** -- ~90% gloss

## What Makes a Good RFQ

| Instead of | Send |
| --- | --- |
| "Powder coat it black" | "Gloss black (RAL 9005), mask the 2x tapped M6 holes, per drawing" |
| "Make it hold up outside" | "Outdoor polyester, textured black, UV-stable, qty 40" |
| "Coat these brackets" | "6061 brackets, semi-gloss black, mask the bearing bore, chase threads after" |

Give the color (a RAL number is ideal), the gloss or texture, and any threads or bores to mask. That is what sets the price and avoids a re-do.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What metals can you powder coat?

Most clean conductive metal: mild steel, stainless, and aluminum (5052, 6061, 7075), plus chromoly. The part has to survive the cure bake, roughly 375 to 400 F, so it is not suited to most plastics or low-temp assemblies. Note your substrate when you request a quote. Hot-rolled steel with mill scale coats poorly, so mention it if that is what you have.

### How durable is powder coating?

Much tougher than wet paint. The baked thermoset film resists impact, chemicals, UV, and weather, which is why it is used on tools, chassis, and outdoor hardware. Polyester powders hold color outdoors; epoxies are best indoors for chemical resistance. Tell the shop where the part lives and it picks the right powder.

### What colors and finishes can I get?

Gloss, matte, textured or wrinkle, and metallic, in essentially any color. Shops stock common blacks, grays, whites, and primary colors and can order a specific RAL or custom powder. Tell the shop the color and gloss level, or a RAL number, and whether you want a texture.

### How much does powder coating add to lead time?

Usually about 3 to 5 days on top of the part production, since parts are cleaned, prepped, sprayed, and oven-cured. Large batches and special-order powders can add time. Ask the shop for the current turnaround when you quote.

### Can you coat over threads and bearing surfaces?

No, those get masked. Coating buries threads and changes press-fit dimensions, so tapped holes, dowel bores, and bearing seats are masked before coating, or chased and reamed after. Call these features out on the drawing so nothing critical gets sprayed.

### How thick is the coating?

A typical layer adds about 0.002 to 0.005 in per side, so 0.004 to 0.010 in on an overall dimension. It softens sharp edges slightly and can close up very small holes. Account for it on tight-tolerance mating features, and leave a small hanging hole (about 0.06 in) for the part to hang on during coating.

## Design Notes That Move Your Price

Not a definition of powder coating. The design choices that move your price, durability, and finish.

- **Mask threads and bores:** Coating adds 0.002 to 0.005 in per side and buries threads. Call out tapped holes, dowel pins, and bearing bores to mask, or plan to chase and ream them after coating so parts still fit.
- **Leave a hanging point:** Parts hang on a hook to be sprayed and baked. A spare hole about 0.06 in, or a tab in a hidden spot, gives the shop a clean hanging point that will not show on the finished face.
- **Prep sets adhesion:** The coating is only as good as the prep under it. Blasting or a phosphate wash is what makes powder resist chips and corrosion. Bare mild steel with mill scale coats poorly, so name the substrate and its condition.
- **Texture hides flaws, gloss shows them:** A high-gloss finish shows every scratch and fingerprint on the part beneath it; matte, textured, and wrinkle finishes hide surface imperfections and resist fingerprints. Match the finish to how clean the part surface is.
