Springback means the tube relaxes open after the die releases, so shops overbend to hit the drawing angle. Achievable radius is set by the bend tooling on hand; call out center-line radius (CLR) and wall thickness and the shop confirms it can be bent without a new die.

Bend first, then weld, then finish. Coating a welded assembly hides weld discoloration and gives one uniform surface, so plan the sequence before you order.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between rotary draw and roll bending?

Rotary draw bending pulls the tube around a fixed radius die for tight, accurate, repeatable bends, and is the default for most tube work. Roll (ring) bending feeds the tube through three rolls to form large sweeping radii like coils and arcs. Note the radius you need and shops pick the right method.

### When do I need a mandrel bend?

A mandrel supports the tube from the inside so a thin wall does not collapse or wrinkle on a tight radius. Thin walls (roughly under 0.065 in) and radii below about 3x the diameter usually need one. Thicker walls and larger radii bend fine without it, which is cheaper.

### How tight a radius can you bend?

It depends on diameter and wall. A common rule is a center-line radius of about 2x to 3x the tube diameter; tighter than that needs a mandrel and matched tooling. Give the CLR and wall thickness on your drawing and the shop confirms it can be bent without new dies.

### What is springback and how is it handled?

After the die releases, the tube relaxes and opens slightly, more in high-strength alloys. Shops overbend by a known amount to land on the target angle. You do not design for it; just tolerance the finished angle.

### Can you bend square and rectangular tube?

Yes. Square and rectangular sections bend on the same rotary draw machines with section-specific dies, though they are more prone to wall distortion, so a mandrel or wiper die is used on tight radii.

### Can bent tubes be welded into an assembly?

Yes. Most shops notch, cope, and weld bent tubes into frames, loops, and fabrications in-house. Send the assembly drawing and note weld finish, then finish or coat after welding.

### What file formats should I send?

STEP, IGES, X_T, DWG, DXF, or a dimensioned PDF. Include material, tube diameter and wall, the CLR, each bend angle, straight lengths, quantity, and any end-forming or finish.

## Design Notes That Move Your Price

Not a definition of bending. The design choices that move your price and lead time.

- **Radius is set by tooling:** A bend needs a die at that exact radius. Design to a radius the shop already owns (ask, or match a common 2x to 3x diameter CLR) and you skip the cost of a new die.
- **Leave straight between bends:** The machine needs to grip the tube between bends. Too little straight, roughly under one diameter, and the clamp cannot hold it, forcing a hand fixture or a redesign.
- **Thin walls want a mandrel:** A thin wall on a tight radius collapses or wrinkles without inside support. Either add wall thickness, open the radius, or accept the mandrel setup cost. Say which you prefer.
- **Bend before you machine:** Bending moves material and springs back, so precision holes and mating faces added before the bend will shift. Put close-tolerance features on straight sections machined after bending.
