# Heavy VTL and large-diameter shops: 20" to 10 ft swing work, routed to you

**For: Heavy VTL & large-diameter turning shops**

The RFQs with 20 inch diameter 1020 bar, forged carbon-steel rings, and oversized flanges do not fit the prototyping-marketplace network. If your shop runs a VTL or a heavy horizontal lathe, we have the work.

*Free to join* · *No lead fees* · *Heavy iron welcome*

## The large-diameter work on our board

A sample of the oversize-turning RFQs we have been receiving. These parts are routinely declined by instant-quote marketplaces because they do not fit the standard CNC envelope.

### Carbon-steel bar and forged billet, 20"+ diameter

- 1018, 1020, 1045, A36 forged rounds and ring-rolled rings
- Shafts, hubs, flanges, bearing housings for power-gen and heavy equipment
- Qty 1–20; finish turn, bore, face, and single-point thread features

### Alloy steel heavy shafts and journals

- 4140 pre-hardened and 4340 bar to 18 ft long on heavy horizontal lathes
- Pump shafts, rolls, turbine shafts, mill rolls
- Stress relief, grinding, and in-process inspection expected on tight features

### Stainless, duplex, and nickel-alloy rings and flanges

- 316, 2205, Inconel 625 forged rings for marine, chemical, and energy service
- Weld-prep, boring, and face grooves on O-ring glands
- NACE / sour-service documentation when the end use calls for it

### Oversize aluminum and bronze turning

- Aluminum (6061 cast and wrought) housings 20–60 in in diameter
- Phosphor bronze and aluminum-bronze bushings for mining and marine
- Plate blanks pre-machined on the VTL for subsequent 5-axis work

## What a qualified heavy-turning shop looks like

- **VTL swing / chuck size:** 24", 36", 48", or larger. Pit-mounted VTLs for 10 ft+ swing a bonus.
- **Heavy horizontal lathes:** Big American, Kingston, Mazak Slant Turn, or equivalent with 20"+ swing over the ways and 10 ft+ between centers.
- **Boring mill backup:** Floor-type or planer-type horizontal boring mills for faces, bores, and features too large for the VTL alone.
- **Material sourcing:** Relationships with Charter, TimkenSteel, Ellwood, Scot Forge, Ulbrich, or equivalent mills for forged bar and ring-rolled rings. We often need you to source stock faster than the customer could.
- **In-process inspection:** Portable CMM arm or template-based inspection on the machine; large-part layout and bluing when needed.
- **Heavy rigging and shipping:** Overhead crane capacity and the dock to actually ship a 2000 lb part. We will not route a job your shop cannot physically load out.
- **Secondary ops network:** Grinding, heat treat, plating, and weld-prep partners you already use. Not required in-house.

## What a heavy-iron partner gets

- **Jobs priced like heavy work:** We do not pressure VTL quotes into a 48-hour prototype turnaround. 4–8 week lead times are communicated to customers before you quote.
- **Free to join; no fees:** No subscription, no per-RFQ fee, no commission. The customer pays us separately from your quote.
- **You see the real part:** CAD, drawing, weight, material certs required, and the ship-to location before you commit.
- **Material sourcing paid up front:** Where you source the forging or billet, that cost is passed through and paid before you cut.
- **Keep your own customers:** Our RFQs are from hardware teams and buyers who found us, not from your book of business.
- **One-shop or network sourcing:** If a job needs rough-turning on your VTL and precision grinding at a partner, we help coordinate rather than making you quote the whole thing.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do you understand that an 1800 lb part is not a next-day job?

Yes. Our intake flow for oversize parts captures weight, lift limits, and realistic lead time before the RFQ reaches you. If a customer is asking for a 20 inch forging in two weeks and the mill is 6 weeks out, we tell them before you ever see it.

### Who pays for the forging or billet?

You source and bill it; the customer pays OpenSpindle before you release the material purchase, so you are not out of pocket on long-lead stock.

### What about trucking an oversize part?

Freight is quoted and billed through us so the customer handles LTL and oversize permits; you dock-load, we handle the rest.

### Do you have the volume to be worth our time?

Heavy-turning RFQs are a smaller stream than prototype CNC, but they are long-cycle and higher-value. Expect a few qualified RFQs per month per region as the content pages scale.

### What certifications do you want to see?

ISO 9001 is enough for most jobs. ASME Section VIII, PED, API 6A/16A, and AWS code-weld credentials open the pressure-vessel and oilfield work. Call them out on your profile.
