## Certifications

For architectural woodwork and stone, the certification tells you the shop can hit the standard your architect specified. Look for these on a shop before you send drawings, and confirm the grade or scope for your project.

- **AWI / AWS:** The Architectural Woodwork Institute standards (Architectural Woodwork Standards) are the millwork quality benchmark. They define the Economy, Custom, and Premium grades that architects call out on the specs for cabinetry, casework, and paneling.
- **KCMA:** Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association certification. Cabinets tested and certified to the ANSI/KCMA A161.1 standard for structural, finish, and hardware durability, common on residential and multi-family work.
- **FSC Certified:** Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody certification for responsibly sourced wood. Often required to earn LEED or other green-building credits on commercial projects.
- **Licensed Contractor:** A current state or local contractor license for shops that install as well as fabricate. Required for permitted on-site work and to pull the trade under a general contractor.
- **Natural Stone Institute (NSI):** Accreditation for stone fabricators covering fabrication and installation quality. The mark to look for on granite, quartzite, and marble countertop and surface work.

## Why OpenSpindle

- **Talk directly to the shop:** No sales rep in the middle. You work with the shop actually building your millwork or fabricating your stone, which matters when shop drawings need a real conversation.
- **No sales gate:** Send your plans and request quotes without a sales rep or account manager in the middle. Faster than tracking down a dozen shops one at a time.
- **Local shops for install:** Millwork and stone often need on-site measure and installation. Find shops in your area that can fabricate and install, not just ship a crate.
- **Compare multiple shops:** See several independent shops with the certifications and equipment your project needs, and compare bids rather than taking a single number.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do shops handle both commercial buildout and residential work?

Many do, but their sweet spot varies. Commercial buildout (offices, retail, hospitality, healthcare) leans on casework, reception, and fixtures at scale with tighter schedule and code requirements, while residential and custom-home work leans on cabinetry and finish detail. Check a shop profile and confirm they have done projects like yours.

### What are AWI standards and why do they matter?

The Architectural Woodwork Standards define the quality grades (Economy, Custom, Premium) that architects reference for millwork, casework, and paneling. The grade sets the joinery, materials, and finish level your project is held to. Confirm a shop can build to the grade your specs call out before you award the work.

### Can I get custom cabinetry and casework made to my drawings?

Yes. Independent shops build custom cabinetry, casework, and built-ins to your architectural drawings and finish schedule. Send elevations and any millwork details, and the shop can produce shop drawings for approval before fabrication. Note quantities and your target install date so they can plan the run.

### Stone or solid surface for countertops?

Natural stone (granite, quartzite, marble) offers unique material and high durability but needs sealing and careful seaming. Engineered quartz is consistent and low maintenance. Solid surface is seamless and repairable, good for healthcare and high-traffic surfaces. Tell the shop the look, use, and budget and they will template and fabricate accordingly.

### What are typical lead times for architectural millwork?

Lead times depend on scope, grade, and finish, and usually start after shop drawings are approved and materials are in hand. Custom millwork and casework commonly run several weeks, longer for premium-grade or large packages. Share your project schedule up front so shops can quote a realistic timeline and flag long-lead materials.

### Do shops produce shop drawings and coordinate with BIM?

Most architectural woodwork shops produce shop drawings for architect approval before fabrication, and many can coordinate with the project BIM model and other trades. If you need model coordination or a specific submittal format, note it in your request so the shop scopes the drafting time.

### What files and plans should I send for a quote?

Architectural drawings and elevations, millwork and casework details, the finish schedule, and any material or AWI grade requirements. CAD files (DWG), a BIM model, or fully dimensioned PDFs all work, plus quantities and your target install date. For stone, include the surface layout and edge profile.
