# Custom bike parts, components, and prototypes

From one-off prototypes to small production runs, OpenSpindle helps cycling companies, framebuilders, teams, and product designers source custom bike parts. Send your CAD, drawings, BOM, or even just the part you're trying to make. We'll review the requirements and source qualified manufacturing partners for the job.

**Certifications:** Built by bike racers, One part or 1,000, Prototype to production

**Minimum order:** 1 part | **Core materials:** 7075 aluminum, titanium, carbon | **Processes:** CNC, 3D printing, carbon, sheet | **Run size:** Prototype to production

## We race bikes. We know bikes.

OpenSpindle co-founders Tom Petrini and Bryan Petro are avid cyclists, and we both race: criteriums, road races, gravel races, and cyclocross. Bikes are how we spend our weekends and a good part of our weekdays.

That changes how we read your project. We know why a derailleur hanger is supposed to bend before the frame does, why a stem clamp that creaks gets noticed on the first climb, and why a computer mount that rattles loose on a gravel descent needs a better design. When you send us a bike part, we look at it the way riders do, then find the manufacturing partner set up to make it.

## Certifications

Most custom bike parts are made to your drawing, and the checks that matter are fit, material, and finish. For safety-critical parts, testing to the relevant bicycle standard is the brand's responsibility, usually through an accredited test lab, so plan for it early.

- **Material certifications:** Ask for mill certs when alloy and temper matter, such as 7075-T6 for chainrings and stems or Grade 5 titanium for axles and bolts. It confirms you received the material you designed around.
- **ISO 4210 and 16 CFR 1512:** ISO 4210 sets safety requirements and test methods for bicycles and key components such as frames, forks, handlebars, and stems. 16 CFR 1512 is the US CPSC bicycle regulation. Relevant when you sell complete bikes or safety-critical parts.
- **EN 15194 for e-bikes:** The European standard for electrically power assisted cycles. It applies to complete e-bikes, so it matters for battery mounts, motor brackets, and enclosures that are part of a certified bike.
- **First article inspection:** For production runs, ask for a first article report before the full batch ships. It is the cheapest way to catch a wrong thread, bore, or interface before you have 500 of them.

## Bike standards to call out on your drawing

Bikes run on interface standards. Naming the standard your part must mate with saves a round of questions and a wrong first article.

| Interface | Common standards | What to specify |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Thru-axles | 12x100 and 12x142 mm (road), 15x110 and 12x148 mm Boost (mountain) | Axle length, thread pitch (M12x1.5 is common but not universal), and head style |
| Bottom brackets | BSA threaded (1.37 in x 24 TPI), T47 (M47x1), press-fit shells | Shell standard and width; BSA drive-side cups use a left-hand thread |
| Chainrings | 110 mm BCD (road), 104 mm BCD (mountain), brand direct-mount interfaces | BCD or direct-mount standard, tooth count, and narrow-wide profile if 1x |
| Rotors | 6-bolt (44 mm bolt circle) and Center Lock | Rotor interface and rotor size for adapters and spacers |
| Brake mounts | Flat mount (road and gravel), post mount (mountain) | Mount standard, rotor size, and caliper model |
| Cockpit | 1-1/8 in (28.6 mm) steerer; 31.8 mm and 35 mm bar clamps | Steerer and bar clamp diameters, clamp width, and bolt torque |
| Derailleur hangers | Frame-specific hangers, SRAM UDH | Frame make, model, and year, or the original hanger to measure |
| Bottle and accessory bosses | M5 threads, 64 mm bottle cage spacing | Boss spacing, thread, and clearance to the frame |

## Finishes for bike parts

Finish is part of the spec on cycling parts. Call it out on the drawing along with any areas that must stay masked.

| Finish | Best for | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Anodizing (Type II) | Aluminum cockpit, mounts, and cosmetic parts | Color can vary between batches; order related parts together if they must match |
| Hard anodizing (Type III) | Chainrings, wear surfaces, and sliding parts | Adds a hard, wear-resistant layer; mask bearing seats and threads or dimension for coating build |
| Cerakote | Colored hardware and cosmetic parts in metal | Thin ceramic coating in many colors |
| Powder coating | Steel frames, racks, and cargo hardware | Thicker than anodize; mask threads, bosses, and bearing surfaces |
| Bead blasting | Uniform matte look on aluminum, titanium, and stainless | Often done before anodizing for a satin finish |
| Brushing and polishing | Titanium and stainless parts | Common on raw titanium parts |
| Passivation | Stainless steel hardware | Improves corrosion resistance |
| Black oxide | Steel hardware | Mild corrosion resistance; usually oiled |
| Heat treatment | 4130, 4140, and 17-4 PH steel parts | Specify the condition or hardness on the drawing |
| Laser engraving and part marking | Logos, part numbers, and torque specs | Supply artwork as vector files |

## Why OpenSpindle

- **One partner, every process:** A bike part can need CNC machining, 3D printing, carbon cutting, and anodizing on the same order. Send the whole project to OpenSpindle instead of managing multiple machine shops.
- **One part or 1,000:** Prototype a new stem or mount, run a small batch for a team, or move a proven part into production. The same manufacturing partner can repeat the run when you need more.
- **Send whatever you have:** CAD, a dimensioned drawing, a BOM, a broken part, or a clear description of what you are trying to build. We review the requirements and identify the right process before we source it.
- **Riders reviewing your parts:** We race bikes, so we know which interfaces matter, where a part sees load, and which details to confirm before the first article instead of after it.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can you make a custom derailleur hanger?

Yes. Derailleur hangers are one of the most common custom bike parts. Send the original hanger, a drawing, or a CAD file, plus the frame make, model, and year. Hangers are usually machined from 6061-T6 or 7075-T6 aluminum plate. A hanger is designed to bend or break before the frame does, so match the original material and thickness rather than making it stronger.

### Can you make a custom chainring?

Yes. Chainrings are typically CNC machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and anodized, with hard anodize for better wear life. Specify the bolt circle diameter or direct-mount standard, tooth count, chain speed, offset, and whether you want a narrow-wide tooth profile for a 1x drivetrain.

### I need to replace a discontinued bike part. Can you help?

Often, yes. Send the original part if you have it, or clear photos with key measurements, and tell us what it mates with. We can have a manufacturing partner reverse engineer it and make one or a small batch. Safety-critical parts such as stems, bars, and crank arms need extra care, so tell us how the part is loaded.

### Are 3D printed bike mounts strong enough?

For many accessories, yes. SLS and MJF nylon, including glass-filled and carbon-filled grades, work well for computer, light, radar, and camera mounts, and printing is the fastest way to iterate a design. For mounts that carry high loads or see repeated impacts, a CNC-machined aluminum version is the usual next step once the design is proven.

### Can you make carbon fiber bike parts?

Yes. CNC-cut carbon plate is common for chain guides, brackets, covers, and small structural plates. Molded composite parts, such as fairings and custom covers, are also possible and usually need tooling. Tell us the fiber (T300, T700, or T800), weave or unidirectional layup, thickness, and edge finish.

### Do you work with framebuilders?

Yes. Framebuilders use OpenSpindle for dropouts, hangers, bottle and rack mounts, cable guides, and custom hardware, often in 4130 chromoly, stainless, titanium, or aluminum. Small batches are normal. Note whether the parts will be brazed or welded so they ship without a finish that gets in the way.

### What do I need to send to get a quote?

A STEP file plus a dimensioned PDF drawing is ideal, calling out material, finish, tolerances on bearing seats and threads, and quantity. For flat parts like hangers and chainrings, a DXF works. If you do not have CAD, send photos, measurements, the original part, or a description, and we will work out the next step with you.

### What is the minimum order?

One part. Prototypes and one-offs are normal. Expect a setup cost on a single part that drops per unit as quantity goes up, and tell us your target quantity so partners can quote the right process for the volume.

### Do I need to name bike standards on my drawing?

Yes, it helps a lot. Name the interface your part mates with: thru-axle size and thread pitch, bottom bracket standard, chainring bolt circle or direct-mount standard, brake mount type, steerer and handlebar clamp diameters. That removes guesswork and a round of questions.

### Does OpenSpindle understand bikes?

Yes. Our co-founders, Tom Petrini and Bryan Petro, are avid cyclists who race criteriums, road races, gravel, and cyclocross. We read bike projects the way riders do, then match them with manufacturing partners set up for the work.

### Will you sign an NDA before I share my design?

Yes. If you are developing a new product, tell us in your first message and we can put an NDA in place before you share files.
