What to have ready before you request quotes
You don't need finished drawings to start, but the more a maker knows, the faster and more accurate the quotes. Helpful to share: the dimensions you need (length, width, and height, or the space the piece has to fit), reference images or a photo of a piece you like, the wood species and finish you're after (walnut, white oak, painted, or natural oil), and how the piece will be used (a dining table that seats eight, a desk with cable management, a bed with storage). Even a couple of reference images and rough dimensions get you real numbers instead of ballparks.
Solid wood vs. veneer, and why joinery matters
Two builds that look alike can be very different underneath. Solid hardwood is milled from boards and can be refinished for decades; veneer is a thin layer of real wood over a stable core, which keeps large panels flat and can lower cost. Joinery is the other tell: dovetails in drawers and mortise-and-tenon in table and chair frames hold up far longer than screws or dowels alone. Ask makers what they build in, because a mortise-and-tenon table from a solid-wood shop is a different piece (and a different price) than a knock-down import.
Species, finish, and style
The biggest drivers of look and cost are the species (walnut and white oak read very differently from maple, cherry, or ash), the finish (a natural oil, a hardwax, or a sprayed lacquer or catalyzed coat), and the style: clean mid-century lines, a live-edge slab with its natural edge left intact, or a metal-and-wood base. Match the maker to the style you want: a live-edge slab specialist is a different operation than a mid-century seating shop. If you're matching an existing piece, send photos so the shop can confirm they can hit the species and color.
What it costs and how long it takes
Custom furniture is quoted per piece and varies widely with species, size, finish, and joinery. A live-edge dining table in walnut runs well above a maple bookcase of the same footprint. Lead times commonly run four to twelve weeks depending on the piece and the shop's backlog, longer for large or upholstered builds.
