How to hire a sign shop
What to have ready before you request quotes
Sign bids come together fastest from a few basics. Helpful to share: your logo as vector art (an AI, EPS, or PDF file, not a low-res JPG), the overall dimensions or the size of the space, the location and the mounting surface (brick, EIFS, glass, or drywall), and whether you want the sign lit or non-lit. Photos of the storefront or wall, plus any landlord or code requirements you know of, get you real numbers instead of ballparks.
Illuminated vs. non-illuminated
Lighting drives both cost and look. Channel letters house LED modules and read brightest at night, either face-lit (glowing acrylic faces) or halo-lit (a soft glow behind the letters against the wall). Non-illuminated dimensional letters and cut-out logos cost less and suit interiors, monuments, and daytime-only visibility. Tell shops the effect you want (face-lit, halo-lit, or non-lit) so the quotes are comparable, and note whether power is already run to the location.
Permits & installation
Most exterior signs need approvals before they go up. Landlords often require sign-package sign-off, and cities regulate size, height, illumination, and placement, sometimes with a permit and drawings. Many sign shops handle permit filing, survey the mounting surface, and send install crews with the right lifts and hardware. If you are a GC or property manager, note who owns permitting and install so the bids line up.
What it costs and how long it takes
Signs are quoted by the project and vary widely with size, materials, illumination, and install height. A set of interior dimensional letters is a different number than an illuminated channel-letter storefront or a monument sign. Lead times commonly run two to six weeks from approved art and permits, longer for large or permitted exterior work. Posting your project on OpenSpindle returns competing quotes from qualified shops so you can compare scope, illumination, and install before committing.

Trusted reviews of sign shops on OpenSpindle
I needed custom polyethylene foam cut for a hard case to hold some work samples, and the process was quick and easy. They helped me choose the right foam material and got the inserts cut fast. The foam was cut accurately, fits the case perfectly, and keeps everything organized and protected. Great service, fast turnaround, and a quality product. I would definitely use them again.
