A finish protects a part, changes how it looks, or improves how it wears, and the right choice depends on the base metal and the job. Some finishes convert or clean the surface and add no thickness (anodizing, passivation, bead blast); others deposit a film or coating that grows the part and can matter on tight tolerances (plating, powder coat, hardcoat). Which finishes change your dimensions
This is the first thing to check on a toleranced feature. Conversion and cleaning processes add essentially no thickness: anodizing converts the surface (Type II and III do grow the part, but roughly half the coating thickness grows outward per side, so it is predictable and often masked); passivation adds none; bead blast removes a trace. Deposited coatings add real material: powder coat is thick (roughly 2 to 4 mil / 50 to 100 um) and usually masked on mating faces and threads, while plating adds a few microns to tens of microns depending on the class. Call out masking on threaded holes, bores, and datum surfaces wherever the added film would push a feature out of tolerance.
Picking a finish by goal
Start from what the part needs. For corrosion protection on steel, use zinc or zinc-nickel plating, or powder coat for a colored barrier. For wear and hardness, use Type III hardcoat anodize on aluminum or electroless nickel / hard chrome on steel. For color and appearance, use Type II anodize on aluminum or powder coat on almost anything. For stainless that just needs its natural corrosion resistance restored after machining, use passivation. For a clean, uniform cosmetic look with no dimensional change, use bead blast. When in doubt, name the environment and the function and let the shop recommend a finish.
