SHARP R1 — EXTRA SETUPSPROPOSE R3 — ONE PASSCOST DRIVERDFM NAMES THE COST DRIVER BEFORE IT IS CUT

The short answer

A DFM review is a manufacturing engineer reading your design before anything is cut, naming the features that are driving your cost and risk, and proposing specific changes that would reduce them. OpenSpindle offers DFM reviews against an existing RFQ, so the recommendations are tied to your file set and the manufacturing network that would quote it. This guide explains what the review covers, when it is worth doing, and how to request one. Full content coming in phase 2.

What the review covers

A DFM review looks at the cost drivers that matter for your process: tolerances, setups, internal corner radii, wall thicknesses, undercuts, finishes, and threads. For each one the review names the feature, says why it is expensive, proposes a specific alternative, and estimates the savings. This section will expand in a later update.

When it is worth doing

DFM is highest-leverage at the concept stage, before tooling exists. On a prototype, the review often pays for itself through machining-time savings alone. On a production run, it can be the difference between a part that is affordable at volume and one that is not. More guidance coming in phase 2.

Requesting a review

You can request a DFM review against any RFQ you have submitted on OpenSpindle. Use the link in your RFQ confirmation email or reply to that email and ask for a review. We will reach out to confirm scope. Expanded instructions coming in phase 2.
