What Houston builds
Houston has the second deepest metalworking base in this set, behind only Detroit, and it is concentrated in exactly the trades that serve energy. Fabricated metal product manufacturing runs at 2.05 times the national average across 1,816 establishments. Machine shops sit at 2.01 across 538. What that capacity is good at is specific. Houston shops built their reputation on equipment that holds pressure and cannot fail quietly: valve bodies, wellhead components, subsea trees, manifolds and pump internals, machined from large stock in duplex stainless, Inconel and sour-service alloys, to API specifications with inspection regimes to match. Both are Houston, and they are rarely the same shop.

Parts are heavy, tolerances are generous relative to their size, and the consequence of failure is measured in more than money. The space side at Ellington orders the inverse: brackets, fittings and thin-walled structure in aluminum and titanium, where every gram is argued over and a few thousandths decides whether an assembly closes. The Texas Medical Center adds a third stream of surgical and research components. Three requirements, one metro, rarely one shop.
Why the best shop for your part may not be here
It is worth being direct about this, because the location quotient misleads. Machine shops here run at 2.01 times the national average, which reads as abundance and is, if your part is what this market is built for. Houston is arguably the best place in the country to have a pressure-containing part machined from a large forging. But a shop equipped for 24-inch stock in Inconel, with the fixturing, the inspection and the certifications that go with it, is not the shop for a hundred-gram aluminum bracket held to two thousandths, and quoting it will show that. Neither is short of work. Matching the part to the right specialty is the whole exercise here, and sometimes the answer is a shop in another state.

316 and duplex stainless carry the majority of pressure and corrosion service. Inconel 625 and 718 appear wherever temperature and sour service overlap, which in this metro is often. 4130 and 4140 alloy steel serve structural and downhole components. Yes, and Houston is the strongest market in the country for it. Say at the request which specification applies, what the material traceability requirement is and whether you need third-party inspection or NACE compliance for sour service. I need lightweight aerospace parts, not oilfield parts. Can Houston help?
Sometimes, and it is worth understanding why the answer is not automatic. The local supply base is genuinely excellent at large pressure-rated work and comparatively unpracticed at small lightweight precision parts, so shops set up for 24-inch stock in Inconel will quote a thin-walled aluminum bracket accordingly.
