Scan data arrives as a mesh that is usually not watertight and has to be repaired before anything can be printed. The rest is the same unglamorous, essential work that any large research enterprise generates: a rig that holds twelve vials at a specific angle, an adapter between two instruments never meant to connect, a holder for a sample of an awkward shape. Single pieces, no drawing, blocking an experiment that is otherwise ready. The limits are worth stating because laboratory work meets them faster than product work does. Printed polymers are porous at a microscopic level, standard materials are not biocompatible, and most will not survive an autoclave. Say what the part touches and what happens to it between uses, and the material follows from that rather than from the shape.

Choosing a process

SLA gives the resolution and surface that anatomical models and fine laboratory features need, and it is the default for anything clinical. SLS and MJF in nylon suit fixtures and racks that get handled daily, with strength in every direction and no support marks where they matter. FDM in polycarbonate handles parts near heat. Printed PEEK exists for the rare component that has to be cleaned aggressively and is expensive enough to discuss first.
