Raleigh and Durham have become the place where processes get built at production scale for the first time. These parts are not the product. They are the machine that makes the product, and they are ordered against a commissioning date rather than a launch.
The shared facilities amplify it. The NC State nanofabrication facility alone supports more than 300 industry and academic users a year, each of whom needs something mounted, adapted or held in a way the equipment was not designed for.
The practical consequence is that this region runs out of local capacity faster than almost anywhere. Forty shops cannot serve a commissioning schedule across semiconductors, biologics and a university system at once, and process hardware tends to be needed in the same weeks by everybody, because everybody is building at the same time.
