Raleigh and Durham have become the place where processes get built at production scale for the first time. It needs to survive a shift of trials and tell you which geometry to have machined properly.

Then the fixtures that hold the line together

Once a line settles, printing stops being exploratory and becomes tooling, and this is the half that gets underused. Assembly jigs, drill guides, inspection gauges, sample holders, soft jaws matched to a specific part: cheap, made in a day, and revisable the moment an operator finds a better way to work. In a region where forty machine shops are serving everyone commissioning at once, being able to print a fixture rather than queue for one is a genuine schedule advantage. It also removes the temptation to have an operator improvise something, which is how a line ends up with a critical fixture nobody documented.

Choosing a process

SLS and MJF in nylon do most of the work, because a line fixture gets handled constantly and needs real strength in every direction without support marks on the faces that locate parts. FDM in polycarbonate suits anything near heat, and in ABS anything genuinely disposable. SLA gives resolution where a small feature has to be right. Printed PEEK exists for the rare fixture that has to be cleaned aggressively, and is expensive enough to be worth a conversation first.

Yes, and the fast cycle is the whole point. FDM commonly ships next business day and SLS or MJF in about three, plus a day of transit, so a change decided on Monday can be on the line midweek. Send several variants at once rather than one at a time: printed together on the same build they cost far less each, and you learn more from comparing them.

Can a printed fixture stay on a production line permanently?

Sometimes, and it depends on what it touches and how it is cleaned rather than on load. Printed polymers are porous at a microscopic level, so anything requiring genuine sanitation is a poor candidate, and most common materials will not survive repeated aggressive cleaning. For dry mechanical fixturing they routinely last for years. Tell us the cleaning regime and we will say which side it falls on.
