The Research Triangle has forty machine shops. Scientific R&D services run at 2.60 times the national average across 764 establishments, architectural and engineering services at 1.55 across 1,327, and specialized design at 1.45. Machine shops sit at 0.44 across forty, for a region whose buyer-side base runs past 2,500 establishments. That is roughly 64 buyers for every local shop, the widest gap of any metro we have looked at outside Washington.
What makes this region distinctive is not that it does research. It is what happens after the research. Raleigh and Durham have become the place where processes get built at production scale for the first time. Wolfspeed is headquartered in Durham and has committed more than $5 billion across two silicon carbide projects, accounting on its own for around two thirds of regional semiconductor manufacturing employment. Biologics manufacturing has arrived at scale. Apple runs an RTP campus heading toward 3,000 engineering roles, and Kyma Technologies grows the gallium nitride and aluminum nitride substrates that power electronics depend on.
That distinction matters for what people order. A metro full of laboratories buys prototypes. A metro full of first-of-a-kind production lines buys the equipment that runs them: wafer handling hardware and chamber fittings, changeover tooling and format parts, vacuum feedthroughs, and the fixtures that hold a process steady while somebody proves it can repeat. These parts are not the product. They are the machine that makes the product, and they are ordered against a commissioning date rather than a launch.
The shared facilities amplify it. The NC State nanofabrication facility alone supports more than 300 industry and academic users a year, each of whom needs something mounted, adapted or held in a way the equipment was not designed for.
The practical consequence is that this region runs out of local capacity faster than almost anywhere. Forty shops cannot serve a commissioning schedule across semiconductors, biologics and a university system at once, and process hardware tends to be needed in the same weeks by everybody, because everybody is building at the same time. Sourcing wider is not an optimization here. It is usually the only way to hold the date.
Sourcing near Raleigh can mean shorter transit, lower freight on heavy or oversized work, and the option to walk the floor during a build. It is worth paying for on large weldments and on jobs where you need to be in the room. On most machined and printed parts it is not: they ship well, and a manufacturer set up for your part will beat a nearer one that is not, on both price and date. We weigh that per job instead of defaulting to whoever is nearby.

Usually not, and insisting on it narrows your options for no gain. Machined, printed and cut parts ship well. Proximity earns its keep on large weldments where freight is a real cost, and on work where you need to walk the floor. For everything else the right shop is the one set up for your part.
