What Portland builds

Portland holds two large manufacturing economies that have almost nothing to do with each other. Most industries print to preview something they will make another way. And fit cannot be settled on a screen

A printed buckle that feels right in an office may be brittle in the cold and slippery when wet, and neither shows up on a bench. Say where the part gets used and by whom, and the material choice follows from that rather than from the geometry.

Choosing a process

SLS and MJF in nylon carry most of it: real strength in every direction, no support marks on surfaces people touch, and the fatigue behavior lattices need. SLA gives the surface quality that appearance models and sales samples are judged on. FDM in ABS or polycarbonate is the cheapest way to hold something during a weekly cycle. Carbon-filled nylon adds stiffness to plates and frames that would otherwise flex.
