On paper central Ohio looks unremarkable. What the profile misses is the single most interesting manufacturing problem in the region. Honda is building what it calls its EV Hub across central and western Ohio, and the point of it is flexibility rather than scale: the Marysville plant is being set up so that petrol, hybrid and battery electric vehicles can be produced on the same line, with the Honda 0 series entering production in 2026. The Anna engine complex now makes aluminum battery pack cases alongside its engine work, and L-H Battery, the joint venture with LG Energy Solution, is building a battery plant nearby.
Building three powertrains down one line is a much harder engineering problem than building one, and it pushes into everything around the line. A fixture cannot be dedicated to a single body. A locating detail has to hold three architectures without being adjusted by hand. A gauge has to check whichever variant arrives next. Format parts multiply, because each one now exists in several near-identical versions that differ by a few millimeters and must never be confused with each other.
The result is an ordering pattern this region has and few others do. Instead of one part in a quantity of ten, it is three variants of the same part in threes, needed together, that have to be distinguishable on a shop floor at speed. And changeover stops being an annual event planned months out and becomes something that happens continuously.
Against that sits a supply base of 76 shops. It is not the thinnest we have measured, but it is thin for a region where the demand arrives in sets rather than in singles and where being one variant short holds up the whole changeover.
