Applied Materials builds wafer fabrication equipment from Santa Clara and is putting a multibillion-dollar EPIC Center for equipment R&D into Sunnyvale. Lam Research runs from Fremont. KLA builds process control and inspection systems in Milpitas. Each of them consumes machined structure continuously, and each has trained a local supply base to its standards for forty years.
Two other demand streams sit alongside it. Datacenter and AI hardware, designed here even where it is assembled elsewhere, orders cold plates, heat spreaders and machined chassis parts. And the metro produces a constant flow of early hardware companies that need a first article before they have any supply chain at all.

This is one of the best places in the world to have a vacuum chamber component made, and one of the more expensive places to have an ordinary aluminum bracket made, because the shops set up for the first are not competing for the second.
