Orlando is the only metro we serve whose one over-indexed sector is design. Two of them, really, and they overlap more than outsiders expect. Central Florida is the center of gravity for military modeling, simulation and training: more than $6 billion a year in contracts flows through the region, the Army and Navy moved their training-device work here in 1965, and UCF was the first university in the country to offer graduate degrees in the field. Lockheed Martin runs missiles and fire control research, manufacturing and simulation-based training from Orlando and has announced an expansion of around 500 roles. The other is themed entertainment: ride engineering, show systems and the design studios that support them.
The two share people and methods, and the traffic runs both ways. Theme park engineers contributed directly to the Navy Battle Stations 21 sailor training system, and in 2026 UCF and Universal launched a joint school built around exactly that overlap. A third cluster sits underneath both, optics and photonics, anchored by UCF CREOL and the Florida Photonics Cluster, supplying the projection, sensing and laser hardware that shows and simulators depend on.
What all of this has in common is the shape of the deliverable. The hardware is not a product that ships to a customer. It is a machine that has to run for years, continuously, in front of people who did not consent to being test subjects, and it has to work on a date that was announced long before the parts existed. A simulator has an acceptance test. A ride has an opening. A trade show has a floor date. None of them move.
